Launching Pirate Gin Rummy on the App Store

Classic gin rummy gets a high-seas rewrite — wild cards, table melds, card steals, and three legendary AI opponents to beat.

Gin rummy is one of those games everyone half-remembers — a deck, a discard pile, knocking with low deadwood. It's a good game. It's also one most card apps ship straight, with no reason to open it twice. Pirate Gin Rummy starts from the same rules and asks what happens if you're willing to break a few of them.

The answer is a second rule set built specifically for the app: Pirates Gin Rummy. Sets and runs come out of your hand and onto the table, face-up, as you build them. Every 2 is wild, plus two jokers in the deck. Any meld on the table — yours or the AI's — is fair game to steal from, as long as what's left behind still holds up. Dig deep enough into the discard pile and you can pull more than one card, provided you can meld the card at the bottom of what you took.

Two ways to play

Classic Gin is exactly what it says — draw, meld, discard, knock with ≤10 deadwood or go Gin for the bonus, first to 100 wins. It's there for anyone who wants the game they already know.

Pirates Gin Rummy is the one built for replay value: table melds, wild cards, steal & pull, digging the discard pile, breaking a meld apart to recombine it, and going out with no knock at all by melding your entire hand. It runs to 150 instead of 100, with plunder bonuses along the way for landing a full crew set. Tighter knocks and wild-card deadwood penalties keep it from getting soft.

Three legendary foes

Rather than a single difficulty slider, Pirate Gin Rummy ships three named AI opponents with distinct personalities: Calico Jack for learning the ropes, Captain Hook for steady mid-game pressure, and Blackbeard for players who want tight knocks and sharp steals with little mercy. Each is a fully realised character, not a reskinned difficulty label.

Built for the table, not just the screen

The whole thing is native SwiftUI — hand-drawn pirate art, engraved card faces, and card animations that hold up under repeat play. An ambient soundtrack (sea swell, creaking timbers, gulls) runs under the game with card sound effects layered on top, fully mixable in-app and silent-switch aware. Match saving and history mean a game is never lost to a locked phone, and a built-in How to Play guide covers both rule sets without leaving the app.

Pirate Gin Rummy is free to play, supported by ads, with an optional one-time purchase to remove them.
